1. Prépositions de temps at in on

at → point précis at 8 o'clock, at noon, at night
on → jour, date on Monday, on 5 May, on my birthday
in → période enveloppante in May, in 2024, in the morning, in summer

  • She called me yesterday evening. → Elle m'a appelé hier soir.

Distinction à retenir : The plane landed on time (à l'heure prévue) vs We got to the airport in time to check in (assez tôt pour).

Trois distinctions fondamentales :

  1. for vs since : for introduit une durée (for three weeks), since un point de départ (since Monday). Voir la fiche sur le present perfect.
  2. during vs for : during répond à « quand » (during the summer), for à « combien de temps » (for two months).
  3. by vs until : by marque une échéance (l'action doit être faite avant), until marque une continuité (l'action dure jusque-là). I'll be home by six (au plus tard à six heures) vs I'll stay until six (je reste jusqu'à six heures).
