Le futur et le conditionnel : will, shall, would et les conditionnelles

L'anglais n'a pas de temps futur morphologique : il n'existe aucune terminaison de futur comme le français -erai. Le futur s'exprime par des auxiliaires (will, shall), par des périphrases (be going to, be about to) ou par de simples présents. Le conditionnel suit la même logique avec would. Cette fiche recense les six manières d'exprimer l'avenir, avec le critère qui permet de choisir entre elles, puis le système complet des propositions conditionnelles.

1. Le futur avec will : conjugaison

will + base verbale, sans to et sans variation de personne.

La contraction négative est won't /wəʊnt/, forme héritée de l'ancien wol not. Ne pas écrire willn't.

will étant un modal, il est invariable (he wills) et n'est jamais suivi de to (will to work).

Verbes fréquemment associés à will : think, believe, expect, hope, be sure, probably, perhaps.

  • I*'m sure** she will understand.* → Je suis sûr qu'elle comprendra.
  • He probably won't come. → Il ne viendra probablement pas.

3. Shall et ses emplois résiduels

shall était autrefois le futur de la 1re personne. Il subsiste dans trois contextes :

Ailleurs, shall est perçu comme désuet en anglais courant : on emploie will à toutes les personnes.

Règle absolue : pas de will après une conjonction de temps ni après if (type 1). On emploie le présent.

  • I'll call you when I get there. → Je t'appellerai quand j'arriverai.
  • We'll leave as soon as she arrives. → Nous partirons dès qu'elle arrivera.
  • If it rains, we'll stay in. → S'il pleut, nous resterons à l'intérieur.

5. Le futur continu

Formation : will be + verbe en -ing.

6. Le futur antérieur

Formation : will have + participe passé. Il exprime une action achevée avant un moment futur.

  • By next June, I will have completed my degree. → D'ici juin prochain, j'aurai terminé mon diplôme.

  • By the time you read this, I will have left. → Quand tu liras ceci, je serai parti.

Il existe aussi un futur antérieur continu, will have been + -ing : In May, we will have been living here for ten years. (En mai, cela fera dix ans que nous habitons ici.)

7. Le conditionnel avec would

would + base verbale. C'est le « futur du passé » et le conditionnel présent.

Deux structures très fréquentes :

  • would rather + base = préférer : I*'d rather** walk than take the bus.* (Je préfère marcher plutôt que prendre le bus.)
  • would like + to + base = vouloir poliment : She*'d like to** know the price.* (Elle aimerait connaître le prix.)

8. Le conditionnel passé

Formation : would have + participe passé. Il exprime ce qui aurait pu arriver mais n'a pas eu lieu.

  • I would have helped you if you had asked. → Je t'aurais aidé si tu avais demandé.
  • She wouldn't have said that. → Elle n'aurait pas dit cela.

Les variantes modales du passé suivent le même moule : should have + V3 (j'aurais dû), could have + V3 (j'aurais pu), might have + V3 (j'aurais peut-être).

  • You should have told me. → Tu aurais dû me le dire.
  • He could have won the race. → Il aurait pu gagner la course.

9. Les propositions conditionnelles

Règles à ne jamais violer :

  1. Pas de will après if au type 1 : If it rains (if it will rain).
  2. Pas de would après if au type 2 : If I had money… (if I would have).
  3. Au type 2, be devient were à toutes les personnes en registre soigné.
  4. La proposition en if peut se placer avant ou après : si elle est en tête, une virgule la sépare.

10. Wish, if only et l'expression du regret

Après wish et if only, le temps recule d'un cran pour marquer l'irréel.
